Run Free launches walking club

RUN Free are launching a new initiative to help more people combat their mental health issues.

Weekly walks will be taking place every Monday morning to encourage people to get out in the fresh air.

And Run Free’s Sarah Franklin revealed the idea came around after the group walked with BT Sport presenter Jeff Brazier in the build up to Southend United’s recent match with Solihull Moors at Roots Hall.

Sarah said: “To increase the network of people we support and reach out to in raising mental health awareness and inspired by Jeff Brazier’s ‘Walk and Talk’ session we attended on Saturday, we are launching an additional group called Walk Free.

“It will run for an initial six week period as a trial to gauge interest.

“Every Monday between 7am and 9am for the next six weeks, we plan to lead a group of walkers of any level for a gentle walk of approximately three miles to help kickstart motivation for the week.

“We hope by making it 7am, it will allow some people to take part before starting work.”

Those wanted to take part should meet at Thorpe Bay Yacht Club with parking available on Barrowsand and Burgess Road.

No pre-booking or fee is required.

Sarah added: “Just bring yourself and if you want to, your family, your friends, your dog, a cup of tea or coffee, whatever you want.

“Our aim is to create a support group where we’re meeting new people and where you feel you can talk and share experiences.

“Alternatively you can just join for the exercise and motivation.

“We look forward to seeing whether this is something that people will find useful and, if so, then we’ll look to extend beyond the initial six weeks.”

Two walks will take place every Monday.

The first will be begin at 7am while the second will start at 8am with both expected to last an hour.
